Life History:  Perennial

Growth Form:  tree

Southern Africa

Evergreen tree. Grows 1-8 m  in height and up to 5 m wide. Leaves narrowly lanceolate and typically trifoliate. Margins smooth and leaf surface dark green and shiny.   Flower in spring to summer months. Inflorescence is pendant and flowers are small and white to yellow in color. Fruits are typically yellow-ish to pale brown and were historically pounded, fermented with water, and consumed as an drink. Favors soils rich in lime in its native range. Trees are either male or female (dioecious).
Searsia lancea is a popular ornamental in the southwestern U.S., due to its drought tolerance and attractive canopy. Its wood is also prized for its dark, fragrant wood.
