As an artificial hybrid, C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis has no native range. C. dactylon (L.) Pers. var. dactylon is considered cosmopolitan (Casler & Duncan 2003). The native range of C. transvaalensis Burtt-Davy is within the Transvaal and the Orange Free State (now Free State Province) of South Africa (Wu 2011, Casler & Duncan 2003).
A warm-season turfgrass produced by crossing C. dactylon and C. transvaalensis, with finer textured leaves and higher density than C. dactylon. Not considered to produce viable seed, propagated vegetatively. Multiple cultivars exist (e.g., Tiffine, Tifgreen, Tifway, Midway, Midiron, Midlawn, and Midfield).
C. dactylon x C. transvaalensis hybrids were created for use as turfgrasses, including in golf courses, on playgrounds, and sports fields (Casler & Duncan 2003).
