Deciduous shrub 4-5 feet high and wide. Terminal clusters of magenta flowers 6-14 inches long are produced throughout the summer. In cold winter climates, stems will often die back to the ground.
'Royal Red' is an older cultivar that has remained very popular over the years. Developed by Karle A. Lucal and introduced by the Good & Reese nursery in Ohio, and patented in 1942. Awarded the RHS Award of Garden Merit in 1950.
