Growth Form:  shrub

USDA GRIN says it is native to eastern Canada and the eastern half of the US. USDA PLANTS includes much of the western US in its native range. The Jepson Manual considers it naturalized in California.

The Sunset Western Garden Book calls it a fast-growing tree with fern-like branches.
